What words do you live by?

Always be true to yourself

Who influenced you the most growing up?

My grandmother Ruth was always the strong glue of the family.  She believed in crossing “t”s and dotting “I”s and preparing for the future.

Share with us the importance of Family

My family growing up was not always a positive and reassuring environment, so I strive to make sure my daughters are always armed with the knowledge that they are strong, smart and blessed.  They also know that I am their safety net.

Has there been a significant incident in your life either with health, family or your career that you had to bounce back from and how did you do it?

I survived a 14-month period of unemployment that led me to understand that if I didn’t provide for my family and me, no one else would.  My divorce also strengthened me to make smart decisions for myself.  It was scary and it was unknown, but it changed my life for the better.

What did you want to do/be growing up and how has that evolved?

I wanted to be an actress as a child.  As a communications strategist, I have stretched my talents into many ways.  My career has spanned broadcast television behind and in front of the camera, to magazine publisher, to sales to creating communications strategies for NASA.  My additional career is a gospel recording artist.  Just as an actress would have to engage with an audience, I also found that skill necessary in my media career and singing ministry.

Share with us about career, aspirations you have the roles you play in the community, why you love what you do, and what drives you to be the best.

I have spent over 25 years in media and marketing in Hampton Roads.  I’ve worked at several high-profile companies and feel that I have left something positive at each place I’ve been employed.  At the same time, I have met and maintained friendships with hundreds of amazing and talented people in Hampton Roads.  The relationships that began with many as coworkers have nurtured into long-time friendships and productive collaborations.  I have an internal drive that pushes me to always aim for excellence and to leave a place better than it was before I arrived. I get so energized when I meet new and exciting people and I love connecting people with others when there is a synergy.

Describe the ways you influence others you spend time with, work with, and/or impact daily?

I influence others by being a positive energy, giving them hope and inspiration and showing them kindness.  You never know what it means to a person when you say a kind or encouraging word to them.

Do you have a personal mission statement you’re committed to that gets you up in the morning?

I have a faith that gives me strength every day. Even in the worst of times, I know my God will provide for me and that He has given me certain gifts and talents that He wants me to use to help others.

What are your passions outside of your career or do they all intermingle?

I turned my singing passion into a second career.  I recorded two gospel CDs of traditional and classic gospel music.  The titles are Passionate Praises by Dee-Dee Gee and Passionate Praises II by Dee-Dee Gee.  I will record a Christmas CD this Spring to release November 2018.

Tell us about what keeps you fulfilled in your career?

I remain fulfilled because there is such a need for my experience.  I enjoy developing younger professionals and giving them helpful tips based on my years of lessons learned.

What brings you joy?

I feel joy when I see how my music has blessed someone who needed the inspiration to get through a particular moment.  I also get joy professionally when I have solved a problem for a client or customer.

How do you set goals for yourself either short or long term for the many areas of your life and who or what systems do you have in place to stay accountable to them?

I set goals by 5-year intervals and write the plan of action to get me there.

What are your hobbies, interests, sports?

I enjoy community volunteering, quality time with friends, traveling and trying new foods.

Tell us about the people you surround yourself with and how you’ve developed those relationships.

I have many friends from 35 year relationships to 1 year relationships.  I choose friends very carefully.  They are truthful, loyal, positive, independent and forward-thinking.  I develop relationships by maintaining an open and honest line of communications.

What are some of the greatest adventures you’ve been on?

Taking my younger daughter to Miami was an eye-opening experience for the both of us.  We explored the city and that was the first time she interacted with people from many cultures different from what she sees in Hampton Roads.

Where would you most like to travel or adventures you like to have in the next five years?

I am excited to begin planning a concert in the Philippines in the Fall of 2018!  I will accompany a local Philippine church and sing a series of concerts to raise money to build churches in the Philippines.

What are the best things you’ve ever eaten and where did you eat them?

My first experience with New Orleans restaurants was two years ago.  Each meal was 5-star, even the gumbo at the mom and pop dinner.  I was most surprised that I loved the charbroiled oysters at Drago’s Seafood.

Tell us about your cooking skills;

I’m a pretty good cook.  My best meals are the comfort foods.

How do you approach how you consume food?

I am a creature of habit.  I usually choose the same dish at each respective restaurant.

Do you have any special approaches in particular to maintaining good health and wellness?

I trained myself to cut down on sugar and I life weights 3 days per week.

What are ways you give back to the community?

I give back by volunteering on several non-profit boards.  Most currently the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities and Jr. Achievement.

How does Faith play a role in your life?

I am a Christian who believes that we are all here to do something uniquely to help our brothers and sisters.

Do you have get-togethers with a “girl squad”?

Yes.  It’s so important to connect to re-energized and laugh.

What are your secrets to staying organized and working forward each day?

I keep focused on my plan and know that not everything will go exactly as planned.  So I always have a plan B ready and will quickly activate it. Then keep moving.

How do you stay focused on what’s important to you or how have you secured the time to do so?

It’s important for me to be a positive role model for my daughters.  I don’t sweat the small stuff.  And if it’s not perfect, I’m okay with it if I know I did my best.

Tell us about your sense of style and fashion & how has your sense of style and fashion evolved over the years or has it?

I love clothes and fashion.  I actually spent a few years as a weekend personal shopper.  I buy lots of classic pieces and then add an item or accessory that’s in style to make it up to date.  I love to mix and match pieces as opposed to buying an entire outfit. Quality pieces are more important to me than the latest style.

Do you have a favorite item in your closet you cherish?

No.  All of my clothes are specially chosen and my babies.

Do you have a favorite shop or brand that you like to indulge in or a special approach to finding items that you cherish?

Macy’s is my favorite store because I can find my favorite labels, International Concepts, Jones New York, Kasper and Tommy Hilfiger.

Tell us about any and all beauty routines, products that you believe in or secrets you’re willing to share that have helped you?

I have very clear skin thanks to genetics.  I have severe allergies to fragrances so I wear very little makeup and no perfumes.

If you could do anything and not fail (and we all supported you) what would you do?

Final Thoughts

We all have a story, the good and the bad.  Concentrate your energy on the positive and good in your life.  Handle and resolve the things that are negative.  If they are out of your control, let it go.  Life gets so much easier when you understand what needs to be released and what needs to be nurtured.
